Late Leon County, FL educational pioneers Aquilina Howell and Philip John Nelson pose for a photo in Howell's office at the original Lincoln High School on September 11, 1957. Howell had just been appointed by Superintendent Amos P. Godby to oversee curriculum in Negro schools, and Nelson was named as her assistant. Howell would later become the first woman to serve as Assistant Superintendent of Schools, while Nelson integrated the previously all-white Rickards High School as its first African-American Principal.
